How To Build Muscle

How To Build Muscle

Personal trainer John Peel is back at Total Gym Pulse to show us how to build muscle using Total Gym home exercise machine. There are several reasons why this is important. First, building muscle helps strengthen connective tissues, which helps increase bone density. Next, muscles help increase your metabolic rate and give your body the ability to burn calories even when you’re not working out due to having more muscle mass. Finally, exercises that help build muscle can improve balance, sleep and mental health.

John starts the segment by discussing the importance of using slow and controlled movements during your exercises so you can control your body weight. This will help bulk you up and build muscle mass. The first exercise John demonstrates is a bicep curl. On the way up, John gives the cables a nice slow squeeze keeping tension on his biceps the entire time. He also says to make sure your core is flexed because that is where a lot of your power and strength will come from.

Next, John demonstrates working the back. Be sure to sit up and pull the handles straight back. Again, be sure to keep the movements slow and controlled. If the exercises are too easy, simply raise the elevation of The Total Gym to increase the resistance and difficulty.

John concludes the segment by stating you should go for 10-12 reps on all of these movements. Whether it’s legs, abs, biceps, triceps, chest or shoulders make sure your movements are smooth, slow and controlled. All it takes is the proper technique and The Total Gym can help you build bigger, better and stronger muscles.

  1. The Total Gym has completely change my life in a very positive way. Today I feel like i am twenty years younger with more energy than I had when I was twenty. Not to mention how great I look for a man of 57.

    1. That’s great John! We are happy to hear it! Would you happen to have any before and after photos you’d like to share to help other people make the same decision?

  2. The Total Gym was my second home gym system! I think my father bought one for us simply due to the fact that I liked Chuck Norris and was so into his movies at the time, and when I saw him using it, I had to have one. Was one of the best home systems I remember using….then we when with the Game of Thrones-ish home system. I don’t want to drop names, but I’m sure you know which one. 😉 Anyway, great solution and don’t forget to hammer down the diet!

    Thanks!

  3. Hi!
I love the Total Gym! I purchased mine 10 years ago, and it still works great! I use it intermittently with going to the gym to add variety of my workouts and get out of the house! :–) I may have to replace the cables soon however, and the bench cover itself if that’s possible? Its not from my wear and tear, but unknown to me the cats were using it to sharpen their claws on it.. silly cats. Now I cover it up between uses. I have the XLS, and was wondering how that differs from the latest model?

    1. Hey Launcelot,

We have a comparison page that will help give you the low-down on the differences between the XLS and FIT (latest model): http://totalgymdirect.com/compare-total-gym/

Don’t hesitate to open an online chat with one of our agents on the website too, they’ll be able to answer any extra questions you might have.

  4. Ive had the total gym XLS for about 7 years. I use it on the regular even though I will also go to the gym and do free weights I’m 62 and never felt as good as I do now. I’m not sure if I’m bulking up but I know my clothes are fitting differently. Love my total gym
